What is D2MTechnology?
D2Mis a broadcast technology that can transmit multimedia content to users’ smartphones even without an internet connection. The use of this technique will be helpful in emergency alerts and disaster management. InD2M technology, telecom operators can distribute live news and multimedia content without putting pressure on network bandwidth. In such a situation, users will no longer have to depend on internet data.
How D2M Technology Works?
D2M technology works similar to listening to FM radio on a smartphone, where a receiver taps on the radio frequency, as well as direct-to-home (DTH) broadcasting, in which a dish antenna receives direct broadcast signals from satellites and transmits them to the receiver, known as a set-top box.
Why it’s not ready for rollout?
In the paper “D2M Broadcast 5G Broadband Convergence Roadmap for India” published by IIT Kanpur in 2022, it has released the note that currently available mobile devices do not support this technology. To start this technique, advanced smartphones, low-noise amplifiers, baseband filters and receivers will be needed. Work is being done on developing them.
