Government may issue advisory to social media companies on deepfakes

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over AI deepfakes, the government may again issue advisory to social media companies on deepfakes. In this, deepfake photos, videos and graphics may be asked to be removed. Even before this, under IT rules, an advisory was issued to social media companies to remove such fake photos, videos and graphics.


An official of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said that there is a provision in the IT Rules and IT Act that fake content will be removed by social media sites and they should be put in the misinformation category. Although many times such content is put in the form of cartoons and other forms, but social media companies will also have to see that such content against important people is not allowed.
On Friday itself, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed concern about deepfakes in an event, a video of him went viral on social media sites, in which he was seen dancing. He had said that deepfakes are a matter of concern because they spread misinformation in the society.
According to an official, according to IT rules, if social media sites or intermediaries do not immediately remove such deepfake photos and videos, there is a provision of three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
